Music has always been closely connected to roller culture. From indoor roller rinks to outdoor streets and public spaces, sound has played a central role in how rolling is experienced. The connection between rhythm and movement is not a recent development. It has been part of roller culture since its most visible periods in the late 1970s and 1980s and continues to shape it today.

The Role of Music in Early Roller Culture

During the 1970s and 1980s, roller rinks became key cultural spaces. These were not only places to roll, but places where music, social life, and movement came together. Disco, funk, and early electronic music defined the atmosphere. The music was not background noise. It set the pace, influenced how people moved, and shaped the overall experience.

As roller culture expanded beyond rinks, this connection remained. Boomboxes, portable radios, and shared sound systems brought music into outdoor environments. Streets, promenades, and open spaces became extensions of the same culture.

Movement and Rhythm

The relationship between music and rolling is direct. Rhythm influences timing, balance, and pace. When music is present, movement often becomes more consistent and controlled.

You can observe this in how people:

match their speed to the tempo

adjust their steps and turns to rhythm

maintain flow over longer periods

This does not require formal training. The connection develops naturally through repetition and exposure to music while rolling.

Music as a Social Element

Music also plays a role in how roller culture connects people. In shared spaces, music creates a common reference point. It allows different individuals to move within the same environment while still feeling connected.

This can be seen in:

group rolling sessions

rink environments with shared playlists

outdoor gatherings where music is played publicly

The presence of music helps create a collective experience without requiring direct coordination.

Continuity Across Generations

The link between music and roller culture has remained consistent across decades. While the genres may shift, the role of music stays the same. Modern playlists may include different styles, but the function is unchanged.

You still see:

personal listening through headphones

shared music in public spaces

movement shaped by rhythm

This continuity is one of the reasons roller culture remains recognisable over time.

Music and Identity

Music also contributes to the identity of roller culture. It influences how rolling looks and feels. Style, timing, and expression are often linked to what is being played.

Different musical influences can lead to different styles of movement, but the underlying connection remains consistent. Music provides a framework without defining a single way to roll.

Why It Still Drives Roller Culture Today

Music continues to play a central role because it supports both individual and shared experiences. It does not require specific environments or equipment beyond what is already available.

The combination of movement and sound creates a structure that is easy to maintain across different locations and generations. This is why the connection has remained stable over time.

Conclusion

Music has shaped roller culture from its early development to the present day. It influences how people move, how they connect, and how the culture presents itself.

Even as environments and styles evolve, the role of music remains consistent. It continues to define the experience in a way that has not changed significantly over time.

The post How Music Shaped Roller Culture — And Why It Still Drives It Today first appeared on The OG Rollers.

While the setup is different, quads offer a distinct experience in skate parks that focuses on control, flow, and surface interaction.

This difference is what makes them particularly enjoyable in park settings.

Stability and Control on Transitions

Quad roller skates provide a stable base due to their wheel configuration. With two wheels in the front and two in the back, the platform remains balanced when moving across flat surfaces and when entering curved sections.

In a skate park, this becomes especially noticeable on:

bowls

ramps

curved transitions

The wider contact with the ground allows for controlled movement when shifting weight forward or backward. This makes it easier to approach inclines, adjust speed, and maintain balance through transitions.

Natural Movement Through Curves

Skate parks are built around curves and continuous surfaces. Quad skates respond well to these shapes because they allow gradual, controlled turns without requiring sudden adjustments.

When moving through a park:

curves can be followed without breaking momentum

speed can be managed through positioning rather than stopping

movement feels continuous across different sections

This creates a smoother experience where you move with the park instead of working against it.

Slower Pace, More Control

Quad skates generally encourage a more controlled pace compared to other setups. This is not a limitation, but an advantage in skate parks where space, timing, and positioning matter.

A slightly slower and more stable approach allows you to:

read the layout more clearly

adjust your path as you move

stay in control when navigating different elements

This makes the experience more accessible and reduces the need for abrupt movements.

Connection Between Movement and Space

Using quad skates in a skate park highlights how movement connects with the environment. Instead of focusing on isolated actions, the emphasis is on how you move through the space as a whole.

You will typically notice:

transitions between sections happening naturally

fewer interruptions in movement

a consistent rhythm across the park

The design of the park supports this type of rolling, and quad skates allow you to make full use of it.

Style and Visibility

Quad skates also bring a strong visual identity into skate parks. The shape of the skates, combined with personal styling, creates a recognisable presence.

This includes:

classic boot shapes

visible wheel setups

colour combinations that stand out in open spaces

While this does not affect performance directly, it contributes to how rolling is experienced and perceived in shared environments.

Why They Continue to Fit Skate Parks Today

Quad skates continue to work well in skate parks because they align with how these spaces are designed. The combination of stability, control, and responsiveness makes them suitable for navigating curves, slopes, and flat sections.

They do not rely on high speed or complex setups to be effective. Instead, they allow for consistent, controlled movement across a wide range of surfaces.

Conclusion

Quad roller skates offer a stable and controlled way to move through skate parks. Their design supports smooth transitions, continuous movement, and a clear connection between the rider and the environment.

This is what makes Quad roller skates enjoyable in skate parks.

The post Why Quad Roller Skates Give You the Most Fun in Skate Parks first appeared on The OG Rollers.

Roller skating has changed in visibility, styling, and access, but the original culture that made it stand out in the late 1970s and 1980s has not disappeared. The look, attitude, and social energy that shaped roller skating during that era are still easy to recognise today. You can see it in the posture, the music, the fashion references, the confidence, and the way rollers continue to use public space as part of the experience.

The 1980s gave roller skating a strong cultural identity. It was not only something people did for exercise or entertainment. It became connected to music, nightlife, street presence, individuality, and community. That identity still influences roller culture now, even when the setting is different.

In This Article

Why the 1980s Became Such a Strong Era for Roller Culture

The Look and Attitude That Still Define It

Why It Still Feels Current

How You Still See the 1980s in Roller Culture Today

More Than Nostalgia

Conclusion

Why the 1980s Became Such a Strong Era for Roller Culture

The 1980s helped define roller skating as more than an activity. During that period, roller rinks, discos, outdoor promenades, city streets, and public spaces all became part of the same wider culture. Music played a major role, especially disco, funk, electro, pop, and early hip-hop influences. Fashion also mattered. Bright colours, fitted shorts, striped socks, bold laces, graphic sportswear, and confident styling all became part of the visual language around roller skating.

What made that era stand out was the combination of movement and presence. Roller skating looked social, stylish, and self-assured. It was something you saw, heard, and recognised immediately. The skates were important, but the full culture around them gave the activity its lasting identity.

The Look and Attitude That Still Define It

A lot of what people now call retro roller style comes directly from that original period. The quad skates, coloured wheels, high socks, short athletic fits, gloves, and clean but expressive styling all connect back to the 1980s roller scene. These details continue to show up because they were never just decoration. They became part of how roller skating presented itself.

The same applies to attitude. Roller culture from that period carried a very specific energy. It looked relaxed, cool, social, and confident without trying too hard. That is still one of the clearest links between then and now. Even when today’s rollers use newer equipment or different locations, that original presence is still visible.

Why It Still Feels Current

One reason 1980s roller culture still feels current is that it was built around style, music, and freedom of movement in a way that does not easily date. The visual references remain strong because they still work. Quad skates still look good. Outdoor rolling still carries the same sense of visibility and expression. Music still shapes the atmosphere. Public spaces still matter.

That is why today’s roller scene often looks like a continuation instead of a revival. In many cases, the culture did not need to be reinvented. It simply stayed alive through local communities, returning trends, rink culture, street rolling, and the continued appeal of the original look.

How You Still See the 1980s in Roller Culture Today

If you look at roller culture now, the connection is easy to spot. You can still see the influence in:

quad skate styling and colour choices

fashion inspired by 1980s sportswear and disco culture

music-led rolling events and social skating

outdoor city rolling with a strong visual identity

the same mix of confidence, rhythm, and presence

What has changed is mainly the context. Social media now gives roller culture more visibility, and newer generations present it in their own way. But the underlying references remain very close to the original era that shaped the image of roller skating for so many people.

More Than Nostalgia

It is easy to describe current roller culture as nostalgic, but that is too limited. Nostalgia suggests something is being copied from the past because it is over. That is not really what is happening here. The original roller skate culture of the 1980s still works because it was never only about the decade itself. It created a visual and social identity that continues to make sense.

That is why the style still feels natural today. It does not look like a costume when it is done well. It looks like a culture that kept its core identity and carried it forward.

Conclusion

The original roller skate culture of the 1980s is still present today in both style and attitude. You can see it in the equipment, the fashion, the music, the confidence, and the way roller skating continues to create its own presence in public and social spaces.

What survives is not only the look of the era, but the feeling that came with it. That is why the original style of rolling still feels recognisable now. It never fully left.

If you want, I’ll now turn this into a fuller magazine article with stronger subheadings and more depth in each section.

The post The Original Roller Skate Culture of the 1980s Is Still Present Today first appeared on The OG Rollers.

Although it was released in store earlier this month, you can now purchase it online for £89. The single-breasted design has already proved a massive hit on Instagram, due to not only the gorgeous wide lapels, the on-trend, oversize fit and super cosy wool texture – but also the fact that Vogue Williams, Holly and fashion blogger Erica Davies have all rocked it. Now if you don’t know who Erica Davies is – let us enlighten you. Erica is a huge fashion influencer and has always been a big fan of M&S, having single-handedly made THAT starry-print constellation dress a sellout last year.

Speaking about how to style the purple coat of dreams, the chic mother-of-two advised: “Do not fear the purple hue. It works SO WELL with navy blue, bright yellow (yes really), orange or red AND emerald green. It’s a completely useful shade if you want to inject some colour into your life. And who doesn’t want that? We couldn’t agree more, E.

Second earth deep abundantly winged appear air can’t earth

She added: “I used to feel like I could only wear a certain type of clothing and I think sometimes you just get stuck in a bit of a rut and wear the same thing over and over again and you create rules for yourself, you think ‘ooh I can’t wear trousers because I’ve got a big bum’ and you create some sort of rule book of your own and sometimes you’ve just got to go ‘right, I’m going to tear up that rule book and I’m going to experiment or I’m going to find my trouser, or I’m going to find my V-neck top or I’m going to find the place that does the perfect T-shirt’. It’s about finding the right things.”

Ali, who gave birth to the couple’s baby daughter Isla in September, looked gorgeous in a black maxi dress that featured an off-the-shoulder neckline. Holly was also her typically stylish self, wearing a white summer dress, while Scarlett looked lovely in a zebra-print number.

There’s only a week to go before I’m a Celebrity returns to screens, and ahead of the launch, show’s leading ladies have been enjoying some downtime together. Presenter Holly Willoughby, who has stepped in for Ant McPartlin this year, was pictured having a laugh with Scarlett Moffatt, who co-hosts the spin-off show, I’m a Celebrity: Extra Camp.

The only parenting book I read before my almost-four-year-old son Leo was born was Pamela Druckerman’s 2012 Bringing up Bébé. As an American transplant raising kids in France, Druckerman observed that the French child is not the sun in the familial solar system. I prepared myself to nurture and prune a bien-élevé (well-mannered) toddler—the kind that wears smocked Liberty print dresses, sits and colors, and eats braised endives while her parents hold forth about a new podcast. The book’s thesis and the key to a civilized French household: the parents are in charge, not the children. “C’est moi qui décide,” is the French mother’s last word to her obstreperous child.

I thought of Druckerman’s credo several years ago when I accompanied a friend and her two-and-half-year-old to get ice cream. “He only likes strawberry,” my friend told the teenager behind the counter. “And it cannot contain seeds.” This part, my friend repeated in the sort of non-negotiable tone that a pop star’s tour manager might demand the absence of carnations from a dressing room flower arrangement. Obviously ill-versed in the toddler mood-swing, the teenager informed us there was no more seedless strawberry ice cream to be had. Gamely, if naively, she suggested strawberry frozen yogurt that would be made on the spot with actual strawberries —!!!—and their seeds. Reluctantly, my friend agreed, and then proceeded to meticulously de-seed every spoonful as her son suspiciously appraised her efforts. As I watched, I thought of all of those French children surely quietly, gratefully, tucking into bowlfuls of seed-ed cassis sorbet, and I smugly told myself—with the superiority of the childless—that I would never be one of those mothers who tend slavishly to the demands of their offspring.

Day saying great fish unto first set which very.

Then I had Leo. And I have been his butler (I mean mother) for almost 4 years. To my relief, he is all for a seeded ice cream, which is not to say that he does not have other, let’s call them, eccentricities. It occurred to me that things might be taking a problematic turn when Leo was about two, and I found myself carrying a breakfast tray upstairs so that he might enjoy a morning bed picnic. He sat in my bed in his pajamas, reclining against more pillows than you’d find in a guest bedroom in a Nancy Meyers movie. I had long nurtured a Downton Abbey fantasy, but here I was, cast in the wrong role.

Master Leo just needs a little bell!

But he already has one: at about 18 months, I’d attached a plush musical pull-toy to the edge of his crib. Instead of playing it before going to sleep, Leo took to yanking on the string—prompting a Brahms’ lullaby to sound—upon rising from his nap, ostensibly ringing for service. “I’d like water!” he’d say. As I’d scurry downstairs, he’d call out, refining his order: “Freezing cold!” Now, whenever I hear Brahms, I feel a Pavlovian urge to leap to my feet and beeline to his side, like a flight attendant heading towards a first-class passenger who’s just buzzed for beverage service.

I HAD LONG NURTURED A DOWNTON ABBEY FANTASY, BUT HERE I WAS, CAST IN THE WRONG ROLE.

“Master Leo just needs a little bell!” a friend suggested, laughing.

The post The Versatile Flat Shoe Style That’s Probably Missing From Your Wardrobe first appeared on The OG Rollers.

To kick off the new year, Tiffany & Co. joins this fold, announcing plans to share the provenance (the origin) of its newly sourced, individually registered diamonds.

After a chance encounter with a beautiful blonde writer named Beck (Elizabeth Lail), Joe stalks her and eventually wins her affection—but not without killing off people within her inner circle first.

The chilling tale left viewers with many unanswered questions by the end of its first season, but now that You has been renewed, the show’s makers and actors have planted the earliest seeds of what’s to come next for Joe Goldberg. Here’s what we know about You season 2 so far.

Season 2 is filming in Los Angeles

The series heads out west for season 2. Sera Gamble, the series’ showrunner, played it by the book; she told The Hollywood Reporter about the show’s change of location, and what it means for Joe’s character. “Joe Goldberg comes to L.A. and he is a die-hard New Yorker, so I can’t say that he comes to L.A. and he instantly falls in love with the place. At least at first glance, this is not Joe’s kind of town, which is delightful.”

People who watched the show will remember that Paco and his mother Claudia move to Los Angeles, so it’s possible that a Joe/Paco reunion may be in the works.

The book You is based on has a sequel

You was based on Caroline Kepnes’ novel of the same name. Kepnes wrote a sequel, Hidden Bodies, which tells the story of Joe moving to L.A. This would be a good read if you want to get the scoop ahead of the second season. Kepnes has also hinted that there might be a third book in the series, so stay tuned; she told a fan on Goodreads, “You’ll get more Joe eventually.”

Who’s been confirmed for the second season?

Elizabeth Lail sat down with Radio Times after the series premiered to Netflix to say that she will not be returning to the show—Joe did murder her character, after all. “I am sad to not continue that journey with him,” Lail said, referring to Badgley. “The unfortunate thing is, the woman doesn’t win in the end…and I’m so sick and tired of that.”

Despite the series making it clear that Joe murdered Beck after she found out about him stalking her and murdering her friends, fans got their hopes up. Joe’s ex, Candace (played by Ambyr Childers), not only appeared in flashbacks throughout the series, but also showed up alive and confronted Joe in the finale’s cliffhanger after he (supposedly) killed her. This made fans hope that Beck, by the same thought, might make an appearance in future seasons, even though Lail dispelled the rumor.

Ditto. It will be all the motivation I need for season 2. https://t.co/fy2hojauDG

— Penn Badgley (@PennBadgley) January 9, 2019

In theory, we’re not done with Dr. Nicky.

While Beck was forced by Joe to think about “what she did,” Beck wrote a novel that framed Dr. Nicky, her therapist—whom she cheated on Joe with—for her kidnapping in the hopes of obtaining her freedom. After Joe killed her, he published the novel and Dr. Nicky was arrested and sent to prison due to the incriminating manuscript.

“Dr. Nicky is in prison and he is ardently protesting his innocence,” Gamble told THR. “It’s too soon to say definitely whether John Stamos will return in season 2 but we have been talking a lot about the character and we’re excited to keep telling that story.”

The post I’m Happy This Comfortable Trend Is Still Going to Be Cool in 2019 first appeared on The OG Rollers.

 [video src="https://www.instagram.com/p/Brq6lFKHkOH/"]

When Rachel Zegler, a 17-year-old high school student from New Jersey, posted a tweet of her singing a pitch perfect cover of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s “Shallow” back in December, she went viral. To date, the 30-second clip has over 83,000 retweets and 335,000 likes. Now, just a month later, the teen has been chosen to star opposite Ansel Elgort as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story.

Sunshine and eyebrows

Wondering who Rachel Zegler is before you hit the theaters? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered: Here’s everything you need to know about the budding actress before she makes her film debut in the remake of the 1961 classic. Rachel Zegler is a 17-year-old singer/songwriter and self-professed theater kid from New Jersey. She has a YouTube channel with 85,000 followers that has videos of her singing covers of her favorite songs and clips from her life in the theater. According to her YouTube page, Zegler’s previous roles include Belle in Beauty and the Beast, Cosette in Les Miserables, Mimi Marquez in RENT, and other local productions. Coincidentally enough, she also played Maria in West Side Story, which will now be her first role on-screen.

How did she get cast?

Spielberg began casting for the role back in January 2018 while he was filming the fifth Indiana Jones installment. Dedicated to keeping the movie as “ethnically authentic” as possible, the production put out an open casting call for Latinx actors. Zegler responded to the call with a video of herself singing “Tonight” and “Me Siento Hermosa,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Who will she be starring alongside?

Ansel Elgort will be starring opposite Zegler as Tony, a former member of a white gang called the Jets, while Zegler plays the younger sister of a Puerto Rican gang leader. Ariana DeBose (Hamilton, A Bronx Tale: The Musical, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical) will star as Anita, David Alvarez (Billy Elliot: The Musical) as Bernardo, and Josh Andrés Rivera (Hamilton) as Chino.

“I am so thrilled to be playing the iconic role of Maria alongside this amazing cast,” Zegler told The Hollywood Reporter. “West Side Story was the first musical I encountered with a Latina lead character. As a Colombian-American, I am humbled by the opportunity to play a role that means so much to the Hispanic community.” There is no official release date for West Side Story yet, though filming is anticipated to begin this summer.

Turns out it will be just a few months until Noah Centineo returns to Netflix as its dream boyfriend. The streaming platform announced this afternoon that Centineo will star alongside Riverdale’s Cami Mendes and Austin & Ally’s Laura Marano in The Perfect Date. Centineo once played Dallas, a love interest of Marano’s Austin & Ally character Ally in the Disney Channel show. (Fun fact: Ross Lynch, who plays Harvey on Netflix’s Sabrina reboot, played Austin in the show, the guy Ally ended up with.)

“I did [set early boundaries with Noah,]” Condor explained of their decision to create a no-dating pact while working on the films. (Condor also has a longtime boyfriend, Anthony de la Torre.) “We had just come back from a hot yoga class and went to his apartment, and we ordered pizza, and it’s kind of like, ooh, hot yoga, pizza, what’s happening? It was right before we shot the movie, just getting to know each other. And I felt something. And then so we went like this, and I looked at him and I went, ‘Noah, it’s not going to happen between us.’ Yeah, because I felt, for the show to do well, we had to be best-friend professionals. And so I was like, ‘it’s just not going to happen.’

And he was like, ‘Yeah, it’s not going to happen.’ And I was like, ‘Great!’ So we kind of did what we did in To All the Boys the movie, we kind of made a contract and set boundaries and then I’m so happy that we did that because the movie turned out great and now we’re doing a sequel.”

It’s Netflix all the way. Director Chris Smith interviews many involved in the production, with behind-the-scenes video that’s both jealousy-inducing and insanely silly. (Bella Hadid and swimming pigs on a sandy beach? Sold.)

But the footage also hints that the weekend had a dark side, memorably in a tense scene between model Chanel Iman and festival head Ja Rule. The rapper demands she shed her clothes for a midnight swim with him, on camera. She refuses; he drops the f-bomb; we are reminded that Fyre was promoted by blasting bikini pics across the internet. Fun.

There’s a shocking moment in the Netflix doc where event producer Andy King reveals he was asked to “take one for the team” by performing oral sex on a Bahamas customs official. The act would have been in exchange for four trucks of Evian water, or the $175,000 that customs wanted for the water.

The post Taylor Swift Just Surprised Elisabeth Moss at the Golden Globe Awards first appeared on The OG Rollers.
